A journey to Western Mongolia is an extended 17 days trip for travelers who wish to cover many top attraction sites in a short span. You will visit the famous Altai Mountains, which are a complex mountain system in Central Asia bounding Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China, often called Siberian Switzerland. On this trip, you’ll visit the high peak of the mountain along with different nomadic activities while visiting Western Mongolia’s famous attraction sites. Excursion to rare and unique sites such as Milk River, Baga Turgen waterfall, Khyargas lake, Khetsuu Khad as well as Central Mongolian natural creations including historical places and attractions.
Arrived in Ulaanbaatar city, the capital of Mongolia, and transferred to the hotel. Begin the city sightseeing tour to the functioning Gandan Monastery, Sukhbaatar Square, Zaisan hill, and the Chingis Khaan Museum. Stay the night in the hotel. (L/D)
Transfer to the airport and get on an approximately three hours flight to Ulgii, the capital of Bayan-Ulgii province. Stay in a local hotel or standard Ger-camp nearby. (B/L/D)
Drive to the famous Altai Tavan Bogd mountain, visit the glacier and explore the unique landscape. This mountain is a part of Altai Tavan Bogd National park and the highest peak of the mountain is called Khuiten Peak (4374m) which is also the highest point in Mongolia. Spend overnight in tents or in Gers by the base camp. (B/L/D)
Head to the Khoton and Khurgan lake in Tsengel Soum of Bayan-Ulgii province. Those twin freshwater lakes are part of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park and are interconnected by 2km channels each other. We will see the Milk river, which gives you a unique view of the area on the way. Overnight in tents nearby the lake. (B/L/D)
Drive to Turgen valley in the morning. The landscape is very unique and is the best place for hiking. After hiking in the area, go explore the amazing view and see the Baga Turgen waterfall, which falls from a 36m cliff and is divided into two beautiful waterfalls.Stay overnight in tents. (B/L/D)
Continue the journey to the capital Ulgii via Sagsai and visit a Kazakh livestock breeding family on the way. Stay in a local hotel or standard Ger-camp. (B/L/D)
Drive from Ulgii to Uureg lake via Achit lake, to see the largest freshwater lake in Uvs province with an area of 290 km2. Excursion to the Uureg lake, which is a little saline lake located in Sagil Soum of Uvs province, between Tsagaan Shuvuut and Turgen mountains. Sleep overnight in tents nearby the lake. (B/L/D)
On the way to our final destination Khyargas lake, we will pass through the center of Uvs province Ulaangom. Have the lunch by Uvs lake, which is the largest saline lake (3350 sq. km) in Mongolia, and continue the trip to Khyargas lake. Explore the amazing view and the saltwater lake at an altitude of 1035 m above sea level. Visit the next famous attraction in the region called Khetsuu Khad rock, located on the shore of Uvs lake and is a 5-7 km long rock with an exquisite view. Stay another night in a standard Ger-camp. On this day, we will drive to Erdenekhairkhan Soum of Zavkhan province. The whole day will be spent on the road and will have a lunch picnic on the way. Stay in tents nearby the Bor Khyariin Els sand dunes for the night. (B/L/D)
Head to Ulaagchiin Khar lake and pass by the amazing Mukhart river, which starts flowing from the bottom of the Bor Khyariin Els sand dunes. You will also visit the Senjit Khad rock which is 1 km long and a 6 m wide natural rock gate on the top of a mountain. We will reach the Ulaagchiin Khar lake in the afternoon. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in Mongolia and the northern shore of the lake is lined with a sand dune. The freshwater lake itself is 30 km long, 48 m deep and 10 km wide. Head to 452km long Ider river via Tosontsengel, the largest Soum in Zavkhan province. Overnight in tents nearby the river. (B/L/D)
Day 13-14
Drive to Khorgo-National Park, which was created as a result of more than 30 volcanoes’ eruptions over a million years ago. Visit the famous Terkhiin Tsagaan (Terkh White lake) as well as several volcanic craters and fantastic lava caves. After seeing the Khorgo Mountain and the freshwater lake, visit a nomadic family and stay the night in a standard Ger-camp. (B/L/D)
Drive to Kharkhorin city, the ancient capital of the Mongolian empire. Visit the first and oldest Buddhist monastery Erdene Zuu monastery and the Kharkhorin museum. Sleep the night in a standard Ger-camp. (B/L/D)
Drive back to Ulaanbaatar, and spend the rest of the day free. Enjoy the evening with the Folklore show and stay the last night in the hotel.(B/L/D)
